Embrace Ybor City’s Rich Heritage and Future Vision
Ybor City’s vibrant culture is deeply intertwined with the contributions of Afro-Cubans who immigrated to Tampa from the late 1880s through the 1910s. Despite the challenges of segregation in the South, the Afro-Cuban community found a place within Ybor City, creating their own distinct neighborhoods, particularly along Sixth Avenue between Ninth and Twelfth Streets. One notable institution was La Sociedad La Unión Martí-Maceo, a Mutual Aid Society founded in honor of Jose Martí and Antonio Maceo. Though the club faced significant setbacks in the 1950s and was forced to relocate after the 1965 Maryland Avenue Urban Renewal project, it remains a testament to the resilience of the Afro-Cuban community, continuing its legacy in a new location on Seventh Avenue.
